SAMSUNG has produced the best phone of the year but
Chinese firm Huawei, is attempting to take its crown with the launch of the
Mate 9 phablet. Just when you thought the smartphone market couldn't get any
more crowded, another device is trying to attract the attention of gadget fans.
Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, has lifted the lid
on its most advanced smartphone ever and it's hoping to take on the Android
might of Samsung. The Mate 9 is hoping to pounce on phablet fans after Samsung's
disastrous exploding Galaxy Note 7 was pulled from sale.
The new super-sized phone combines a huge screen
with some top-of-the-range hardware to provide one of the most powerful Android
devices available today. And it's not surprising it has such top performance as
it's been designed with the help of supercar maker Porsche.
If you fancy the Mate you'll need big pockets as it
features a huge 5.9 inch FullHD screen that stretches to the edge of the
device.
As you'd expect, Huawei is boasting that these
brains outperform the Snapdragon 821 - a processor you'll find in many flagship
devices including the new Google Pixel. This power is backed up by 4GB of RAM
and 64GB of storage - which can be expanded up to 2TB using microSD cards. As
well as some hefty processing beef there's also a huge 4000mAh battery which
will keep going for around two full days without going near a plug.
The battery can also be recharged quicker than ever
thanks to Huawei's own SuperCharge technology, which can give over 50% battery
life from just 30 minutes of charging. On the rear of the all-metal chassis
you'll find a dual camera which has been made in conjunction with Leica.
This double snapper is able to capture
super-detailed photos and will shoot video 4K Ultra HD quality. It also comes
with optical image stabilisation technology that prevents blur and 4-in-1
hybrid auto-focus that uses lasers to make sure you get the best images, even
in low light.Underneath the camera is a fingerprint scanner, which Huawei says
is its most powerful to date, and can even be used to interact with the screen
- a bit like a trackpad on a laptop. At the launch event in Munich, Huawei
unveiled two phones with the standard model costing €699 (£620).
If that's not good enough for you there's also the
Porsche Design Mate 9 which boasts a 5.5 inch 2K curved screen similar to
Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge.This version will set you back a wallet-busting €1,395
(£1,250).
