Despite reports that George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, voted for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, a spokesman told PEOPLE the couple didn’t cast a ballot for either Clinton or Donald Trump. The spokesman confirmed the former president and first lady cast their ballots two weeks ago, opting to write in a candidate for the office of commander-in-chief. Their choice for president was not revealed.
The couple voted Republican on the rest of their ballots, the spokesman said.Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh falsely announced to his audience Tuesday that “George W. Bush and Laura Bush voted for Hillary Clinton today.” A correction was later posted on his website’s homepage.
Bush and his father, former president George H.W. Bush, have not supported Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. CNN reported in September that sources disclosed that the 41st president intended to go against his party and vote for Clinton.
According to The New York Times, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, former Maryland lieutenant governor and daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, also posted a picture on her Facebook page shaking hands next to the elder Bush. It was captioned, “The President told me he’s voting for Hillary!!”
Trump has lost the support of numerous prominent Republicans over the course of the campaign. While many simply voiced their disapproval, some members of the GOP called for Trump, 70, to drop out of the presidential race in wake of the uncovered hot mic video from 2005 in which he brags about groping women.
