Argentina is in danger of not qualifying for the
World Cup for the first time since 1970 after the team's devastating 3-0 loss
to rival Brazil in a qualifying match on Friday .With just 16 points, Argentina
is in sixth place of 10 teams competing for four South American spots. Brazil
leads the group with 24 points.
"We need to change this [expletive],"
Messi told Argentina's Ole newspaper on Thursday local time, using a word
synonymous with manure. "We're upset with the result, with the game, and
unfortunately, we've lost another," the 29-year-old said via ESPN FC.
Argentina has won only one of its last five World Cup qualifying games. That
was on September 1 when the team beat Uruguay 1-0. Since then, the team's tied
with Venezuela and Peru, and lost to Paraguay and Brazil. On Thursday night,
Brazil, led by Messi's Barcelona teammate Neymar, scored three times against
Argentina in the tense match at Belo Horizonte, the same stadium in which
Brazil lost 7-1 against Germany in the World Cup two years ago.
The two teams began looking equally good, but
Argentina's disorganisation soon emerged, allowing a goal from Philippe
Coutinho in the 25th minute. Neymar doubled the lead in first-half stoppage
time, with Paulinho putting up the third and final goal in the second half. "We
didn't expect this result, we got lost," Messi told Ole, adding, "It
could have been even worse."
With seven qualifying matches still remaining,
however, hope is not all lost for Argentina - they face Colombia on Tuesday
local time. The game is widely being looked at as a must-win for Argentina, but
for that to happen, Messi said the team's going to have to make "a drastic
change."
"We need to change our mental game," he
told Ole. "If you're not mentally strong, the legs won't respond. "We
have a few days to forget this match and prepare for the next, but it will have
to be different from today."
