THE secrets inside Jesus Christ's "tomb" including
the slab on which he was "resurrected" have been revealed after
scientists cracked it open for the first time since 1555 AD.
The tomb where the "Son of God" is
believed to have been laid to rest can be found in the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, where scientists are working to restore
its exterior stonework. But in October a hidden tomb was cracked open by
scientists, who were granted 60 hours to see what they could find. Just hours
before the tomb was due to be sealed, they made a shock discovery.
They found portions of the tomb intact, and took
these incredible pictures of what they saw. A marble slab, believed to be the
burial slab where Jesus was "resurrected", was found hidden under
layers of material, with a cross carved into its surface.
Fredrik Hiebert, archaeologist-in-residence at
National Geographic, said: I'm absolutely amazed. My knees are shaking a little
bit because I wasn't expecting this. "We can't say 100%, but it appears to
be visible proof that the location of the tomb has not shifted through time,
something that scientists and historians have wondered for decades."
Antonia Moropoulou, of the National Technical
University of Athens, said: "This is the Holy Rock that has been revered
for centuries, but only now can actually be seen." The tomb has now been
sealed, and is likely to remain shut for several hundreds of years. The
scientists will now work on the outside of the tomb, encased in a shrine-like
structure, so that it can stand without wooden supports.
The Greek Orthodox Church, Roman Catholic Church and
Armenian Orthodox Church have put together £3.2 million of funding to complete
the project.
