Nigeria forward Victor Moses was one of the star
performers as Chelsea defeated Southampton 2-0 at St. Mary’s on Sunday in the
English Premier League.
Moses, who is in the Super Eagles squad to face
Algeria in November, provided the assist for Eden Hazard who put Chelsea 1-0 up
in the first half before Diego Costa sealed the three points with a brilliant
individual goal in the second half.
The Nigerian nearly got on the score sheet himself
but his shot from 20 yards after skipping past two defenders was pushed away by
Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal. Moses was taken off in the 87th minute
for Branislav Ivanovic to a standing ovation from appreciative Chelsea fans.
The win was Chelsea’s fourth consecutive victory and
fourth consecutive clean sheet in the EPL.
The victory lifted Chelsea into fourth the position
in the league table on 22 points, one point off leaders Manchester City,
Arsenal in second place and Liverpool in third.
Chelsea got off to the best of starts as Hazard put
them in front in the sixth minute, cutting inside Steven Davies before drilling
from a tight angle between Fraser Forster’s leg after he was slipped through by
Moses.
Southampton’s first real chance came in the 29th
minute through Dusan Tadic but his low free-kick was well saved by Thibaut
Courtois. Forster made a double save to prevent his side from conceding another
goal, first stopping an effort from Hazard on 39 minutes before making another
brilliant save off Diego Costa on 41 minutes.
Five minutes into the second half Jose Fonte saved
his side’s blushes, diverting away a dangerous cross intended for Hazard.Chelsea
went 2-0 up on 55 minutes through Costa who bent a superb curling effort into
the far corner.
A few minutes later Moses struck a shot which
Forster spilled but Costa and Pedro could not capitalise on the rebound.
With just over 10 minutes remaining Davies headed a
corner towards goal but his effort took a slight touch off David Luiz and went
just over the bar.
