A YOUNG mother has sparked outrage after allegedly leaving her two toddlers to starve to death as she went on a nine-day long jaunt with her lover. Vladislava Podchapko, 20, is accused of leaving her son Daniil and his older sister Anna in their flat for more than a week without food.
Daniil, who was not even two years old, reportedly starved to death after six days. But Anna, nearly three years old, was saved and is believed to be recovering in hospital. Authorities arrived at the Kiev apartment after neighbours reportedly heard the terrified children screaming and crying.Shameful Podchapko is said to have told stunned police officers: “I didn’t know that children could die.”
Podchapko's little girl was reportedly on the brink of death when she was found and was rushed to hospital. A doctor involved in the child's treatment said, “The girl was exhausted, she was very weak.“She was immediately taken into hospital where we started intravenous feeding.“She is better now and we can say that she will live.“We have started her on tiny amounts of solid food.”
Podchapko now faces eight years behind bars for child neglect and has received torrents of abuse on her Facebook profile. Jola Łebek wrote: “I hope you die a painful death.”
And Caroline Mary-Jane Holligan commented: “I wouldn't leave my children alone for five minutes, never mind nine days and anyone trying to justify what she did is as bad as her.” But pictures posted on her social media accounts appear to show photos of her children smiling and happy.
However, social services failed to follow up on Podchapko after she reportedly pulled her children out of nursery, according to Ukrainian children rights envoy Nikolay Kuleba. The fate of her surviving daughter Anna remains uncertain.
