In a bid to stop needless marine accidents that have claimed countless lives, Total has organized a safety awareness programme for fishermen and seafarers in some of its host communities, stressing that it was worried with the rising level of marine accidents, especially among fishermen.
The event, held in Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogonis, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, attracted over two hundred fishermen who came from nearby local government areas, including Gokana, Opobo/Nkoro, Ando among others.
Addressing the participants at the event, Total’s Deputy General Manager, James Urho, said that fishermen must continue to undergo trainings to develop a better attitude during fishing and reduce their exposure to marine hazards.
Urho noted that marine accidents are caused by avoidable human errors arising from ignorance in safety rules, but pointed out that these accidents can be avoided if fishermen and seafarers apply “the golden rules of safety.”
He said: “This marine safety awareness course is designed to participants with increased awareness of the requirement to safety work in a maritime environment. It is borne out of our commitment to ensure an improved HSE culture of our teeming maritime operators…”
