There are indications that the Federal Government
might terminate the multibillion-dollar maritime surveillance contract between
ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Tompolo’s firm and the Nigerian
Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Global West Vessel
Specialists Limited GWVSL has an existing Public
Private Partnership PPP, agreement with NIMASA for
surveillance and patrol of Nigeria’s waters, against oil theft, piracy, sea
robberies and kidnapping.
NIMASA Director General, Dakuku Peterside, disclosed
in Port Harcourt yesterday, that the PPP arrangement with GWVSL is almost
unenforceable, because of the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission EFCC, which is investigating Tompolo for alleged financial crimes.
Peterside, who acknowledged that the contract was
still subsisting, explained that NIMASA cannot sit down and fold its hands and
unable to enforce its mandate, because the anti-graft agency seized the vessels
belonging to Global West.
To this end, he said, the government might cancel
the contract to enable NIMASA discharge itself statutory mandate.
