The Liverpool legend has recently confirmed that he
has ended his less than successful spell with Major League Soccer side LS
Galaxy and has suggested he has ‘numerous options’ available to him to continue
his playing career or move into coaching. Steven Gerrard has emerged as a shock
contender to take over at League One side MK Dons.
Gerrard has also tried his hand at TV punditry with
BT Sport in the last couple of years, but the chance to launch his management
career at a club boasting huge ambition could be an attractive option. MK Dons
are on the look-out for a new manager after Karl Robinson’s six-year reign as
the club’s manager ended last month, with the outgoing manager having close
ties to Liverpool FC that could explain the links with Gerrard.
Frank Lampard has also been linked with a move to a
club that has a history of appointing high profile managers, with Paul Ince
among those who held the reigns of power at a club currently struggling to stay
afloat at the wrong end of League One. MK Dons chairman Pete Winkleman has admitted
he would be tempted to appoint another big-name manager, as he set out this
criteria for selecting his next manager. “It needs to be somebody who is going
to excite us, excite our support,” stated Winkelman.
“Like our city, we have big ambition. Our stadium
was built for top-flight football and that’s where we want to get in the
future. “We believe in what we’re doing and we believe in the future of the
football club and the city, but I want to start achieving something on the
pitch - it’s about the trophies that you win, the memories you create and I
want to start doing that more. “This might be a time for a manager with real
experience, but we could also look to do something similar to what we did when
Paul Ince came here and that is appointing a young manager who is eager to
prove himself.”
