NUPENG: Gives FG ultimatum as 3000 oil workers lose jobs in Delta
Oil workers union, NUPENG has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to urge oil companies from terminating the jobs of their staff.
The union revealed that already 3000 staff of different oil companies have lost their jobs to an ongoing mass retrenchment of oil workers.
Speaking after a meeting of the Central Working Committee of the union in Delta State, the National President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese urged the FG to prevail on international oil companies operating in the country to stop the ongoing mass retrenchment of oil workers to avoid further loss of jobs.
In his words: “It is painful to say as I address you, Chevron has wound up in the East and their offices closed. A total of 1,500 workers were sacked without their entitlements and nobody is saying anything. As we speak, many companies have left and many others are winding up to go.
“Many oil companies are winding up, including ExxonMobil, Pan Ocean, Sapiem Ground Petroleum, and Hercules Offshore Nigeria Limited. About 3,000 workers have already been sacked by the various oil companies.
“The Federal Government should act fast to avert further loss of jobs. There is too much redundancy in the oil industry, which needs urgent action from government to salvage the situation,” Achese said.
Achese also revealed that top oil companies like Chevron, ExxonMobil, Pan Ocean and Ground Petroleum, among others, were leaving the country following the prevailing economic recession.

NUPENG will take all necessary action to drive home its demands if FG failed to act in 21 days.
We are 100% in support against anti-corruption, but there must be respite for Nigerians. Right now, our members and even those in other sectors are no longer able to pay school fees for their children and even afford rents. Worse still, those being sacked now are so treated without commitment to proper terminal benefits”he said
