The parents of a teenager who took two guns to
school are being praised by police after their quick thinking prevented a
potential shooting.
On Thursday morning they became concerned about
their son, 15, after noticing a handgun and shotgun were missing from their
home in Utah, USA.
The mother and father drove to Mueller Park Junior
High and confronted him, but only after he had fired a round into the ceiling
of a classroom without injuring anyone.
One witness said students dove under their desks
after the shot was fired and that a woman, seemingly the boy's mother, grabbed
the gun from the boy and told him to stop. Police are still trying to establish
why the student brought the weapons to school and whether the gun was fired
intentionally.
Bountiful Police Chief Tom Ross said, "I'm extremely grateful for the parents
for their involvement and the fact that this ended without any loss of
life."
The school, near Salt Lake City, was closed for the
remainder of the day while more than 100 officers searched the building to
ensure it was safe. The teenager has been taken into custody for questioning.
